Welcome to 2024. A new year, a new opportunity to jump back into a showcase with The Media Exchange!

This time, they had the support of the fantastic guys and girls at Kinda Funny. Now, being someone who's been into video games since the first time my family got a NES back sometime in '88(ish), I've been hooked. So as I got older and podcasts became something that covered all areas of interest I've been following Kinda Funny since their departure from IGN. So to get to team up with them again (see Guerrilla Collective) on a new showcase to kick off the year, I had to go big.

A lot of the same kinds of assets exist here as with other showcases I've done with TheMIX, so there's not much to say there. Just that I had a ton of fun taking the art of Michael Heald and bringing it to life. Mike is typically the guy who's heading up all the art direction of these showcases and I love the freedom I get working with him and Justin (from TheMIX) to just go wild with the time given to build something as fun and wild as possible. Mike is of course a legend in video game art, so it's always the best getting to mess with his stuff.

Think the assets above were cool. Watch the full showcase and you can see them in action.

I get it, you're tight on time and can't watch a multi-hour showcase. No worries. Here are some additional assets from the showcase for you to check out.
WE'LL DO IT LIVE!!

In comes the fun part. Since the pre-captured showcase (above) was aired to kick off the GDC week, Kinda Funny wanted to jump in and support even more indie game developers and publishers with a feature in the live expression of the Spring Game Showcase.

Since the two showcases were sisters we didn't want them to have wildly different motifs. Instead I build some expressions inside of After Effects to swap out the color pallet at the click of a button over all the different assets. This way everything is the same, but we could swap the pallet and differentiate the showcases.
Another differentiator of the Live showcase vs the pre-captured showcase was that KF didn't want to do a ton of cut away and bumper assets. Those who broadcast live shows will understand the weight those kinds of assets have on the stream and the stream's quality. So we took some of the reused assets and place them on the studio's front three screens. For that I simply got the total dimensions for those screens and build out a Photoshop file for the team there to edit and update based on the game they're showcasing and it's release information.

Also, because they'd be playing these games live we wanted to create and overlay that would show off the gameplay while also keeping the hosts and guests on the screen. There's nothing better than watching a rad video game being played while seeing the reaction of people playing that game when they're having a blast doing it.

Check out the full live showcase to find your next Indie Game obsession.
